Kirsh, Elizabeth, “Go Figure: Artists Explore the Body in Epsten Exhibit”, The Kansas City Star, 08/09/2009:
“The body as the repository of emotion is beautifully and trenchantly rendered in three all black metal, cast resin and plastic sculptures by local artist E. Spencer Schubert. The bust of a bald, hawk-faced male whose face is resolutely turned from the viewer is from Schubert’s “Avoidance” series. Clearly his subject doesn’t want to either see or be seen. Two small (24 inches high) sculptures of naked men, “Wishing #1” and “Wishing #2,” embody feelings of what can be read as dismay and despair and are completely compelling.”
